The top trending vacation destinations around the world have been revealed. By calculating increases in search volume for travel destinations on popular social media site Pinterest, trend experts WeThrift determined which destinations around the world are trending among travelers and could host huge crowds this summer. Here’s an overview of the hottest destinations – and what you need to be able to visit.

Top Trending Destinations – Information for Travelers

Research by WeThrift found that Porto, Portugal was the most trending destination in the world, with a 62% increase in searches on Pinterest.

A quintessential European weekend destination, the colorful riverside town is more than worth a visit for any traveler, with millions flocking to enjoy its famous patisseries and stroll its cobbled streets. To enter Portugal, travelers must present either proof of vaccination, proof of recovery or a negative Covid-19 test result (performed within 72 hours for PCR tests or within 48 hours for rapid antigen tests).

Just behind Porto was the Greek island of Corfu, which saw a 61% increase in search volume. With its pristine coastline, dramatic sheer rock faces, deep blue sea – and not to mention fresh, healthy cuisine – it’s easy to see why Corfu seems like a hit this summer. It’s also extremely easy to visit, with Greece having removed all of its Covid-19 entry requirements.

Lake Como

With a 44% increase in searches, the spectacular Lake Como is the third trending destination. With views of the huge, sprawling lake that has long dominated the social media pages of travel bloggers and the like, it looks like all that daydream of escaping Como during lockdown is set to come true this summer. As in Portugal, travelers must show proof of vaccination, proof of recovery or a negative Covid-19 test result to gain entry.

Known for its beaches, Spanish architecture and vineyards, the Spanish island of Majorca is trending with a 35% increase in searches. The largest of the Balearic Islands, the charms of Majorca have seduced Europeans for decades and are now firmly in the sights of travel-hungry people the world over. Travelers to Spain should be fully vaccinated – with a booster if the last vaccine was taken more than nine months ago. The country recently made changes to allow unvaccinated travelers to enter with a PCR test performed within 72 hours or an antigen test performed within 24 hours.

The second Greek island to make the list, it seems travelers dream of posing once more against a backdrop of traditional blue and white Greek buildings. Research Mykonos grew by 32%, with the island just as popular with young people embracing the party side of the times as it is with families looking for a more laid-back experience.

Few cities are as breathtaking as Istanbul – a view clearly shared by the masses as it received a 26% boost in searches. The city has it all; from the historic remnants of empires past littered throughout the city, to a thriving nightlife – not to mention the sprawling bazaars, passionate locals and stunning views – Istanbul deserves a spot on any traveler’s bucket list. Fully vaccinated travelers with proof do not need to test before entering, while unvaccinated travelers must present either a PCR test performed within 72 hours or an antigen test performed within 48 hours.

Having long established itself as one of the favorite destinations for travelers around the world, the world’s most famous party island looks set to resume its momentum this summer, with interest in Ibiza up 26% . Like Mykonos, there’s more to their island than its clubs, with the northern end proving to be much quieter and its beautiful beaches catering to all types of travellers.

Now that the vast majority of barriers to entry into Thailand have been removed, the hugely popular destination is back. Searches for Phuket, the country’s largest and most popular island, increased by 26%, with travelers eager to re-explore the nightlife of Patong or the scenic beaches of Rawai, Kata and Nai Harn. All travelers to Thailand are required to have a Thailand Pass, which can be applied for here – but it looks like this requirement may be dropping in the next few weeks.
