Singapore prosecutor dies in suspected accident in Phuket


PHUKET: Singapore Deputy Prosecutor and Honorary Secretary of Porsche Club Singapore Gnanasihamani Kannan died on Tuesday (June 14) in an accident believed to have taken place in Phuket.

The Office of the Attorney General (AGC) is deeply saddened by the passing of Mr. Gnanasihamani Kannan, Principal Director and Senior State Counsel in the Criminal Division of the AGC. Mr Kannan died in an accident on June 14, 2022 while on leave overseas. He was 52 years old. AGC said in a statement.

The Straits Times reports that Mr. Kannan “is suspected of having died while on vacation with his family in Phuket”. A spokesperson for his family said the relatives had requested privacy to grieve. Mr. Kannan is survived by his wife and two sons.

Deputy Attorney General Kannan was senior director of the AGC’s criminal division, which he first joined in 1995. Mr. Kannan had more than 20 years’ experience as a prosecutor. He also worked for five years in the Legal Services Department of the Singapore Ministry of Manpower and as Senior State Counsel.

In addition to his official duties, Mr. Kannan was Honorary Secretary of the Porsche Club Singapore.

Phuket police reported no traffic accidents or other incidents involving the death of foreigners in June. According to Thailand’s Road Safety Council, more than 40 people have died in road accidents in Phuket so far this year, with only a few cases being publicly reported.
