GOGAMUKH, September 21: Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), supported by more than 20 other Assam-based organizations, on Tuesday launched an indefinite blockade here in Dhemaji District (Assam) to protest the transport of construction materials by NHPC to its Subansiri lower hydroelectric power project site in Gerukamukh.
Several hundred protesters from Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Majuli and other districts of Haut-Assam on Tuesday blocked trucks carrying construction materials and equipment to the NHPC site in Gogamukh.
AJYCP Chairman Palash Changmai said the blockade against NHPC will continue until construction work on the power project is stopped.
The AJYCP and its allies have called for construction activities on the 2,000 MW hydel project near the Assam-Arunachal border to be halted until a clear disaster mitigation policy is formulated by the authority.
Leaders of Adivashi Students Union, Tai Ahom Students Union, Motok Students Union, One-Women Committee, Manav Adhikar Sangram Somoti and others flayed governments of the Center and States for the “strong” implementation of the mega project, ignoring the concerns raised. by NGOs and experts that the dam would have a devastating impact in the event of an earthquake on the people living downstream of the dam.
On September 13, the peasant organization of Assam, Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti, organized a demonstration at the project site to demand the demolition of the dam.
The NHPC resumed work on the project in 2019 after an eight-year shutdown due to protests.
