Government clears Loy Krathong events nationwide

BANGKOK: The Government Center for Administering the COVID-19 Situation will allow Loy Krathong events to be held nationwide on November 19, provided that measures are taken to restrict the spread of the coronavirus.

Sumanee Wacharasin, director of risk communication for the Department of Disease Control, said today (November 10) that Loy Krathong tank events will be divided into two categories, reports the Bangkok Post.

The first concerns the activities of individuals, families and small groups of people.

These will be subject to disease control measures and personal hygiene practices recommended by the Department of Public Health.

The practices cover the use of face masks, social distancing, and hand washing.

The second category refers to major events such as those usually organized in the provinces of Bangkok, Sukhothai and Chiang Mai. They must be approved by the respective provincial communicable disease committees.

The committees would oversee the organization of small and large events to ensure organizers comply with disease control measures, Dr Sumanee said.

The government will require organizers of Loy Krathong events to provide protective equipment, including face masks for themselves and staff, limit the number of visitors, impose social distancing on all activities (including distance between members of the public during performances), set up body temperature control points, provide hand sanitizer gel, perform regular cleaning of surfaces, install bins with lids and perform regular cleaning of toilets.
