Mixed doubles stars Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Sapsiree Taerattanachai advanced to the round of 16 at the 2021 BWF World Championships on Wednesday in Huelva, Spain.

The second seed from Thailand only needed 28 minutes to knock out Germans Patrick Scheiel and Franziska Volkmann 21-7, 21-13 in the second round.

The world No.1 duo, who won the triple season-ending title in Indonesia earlier this month, will next face Mathias Thyrri and Mai Surrow of Denmark for a place in the quarter-finals.

The Danes took a forfeit victory over Rinov Rivaldy and Pitha Haningtyas Mentari of Indonesia.

Chinese seeds Zheng Siwei and Huang Yaqiong, who ceded first place in the standings to Dechapol and Sapsiree last week, were toppled by Chang Tak Ching and Ng Wing Yung of Hong Kong on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, women’s doubles duo Jongkolphan Kititharakul and Rawinda Prajongjai also advanced to the bottom 16.

The sixth-seeded duo defeated Alina Davletova and Ekaterina Malkova of Russia 21-16, 13-21, 21-17. They face Ashwini Ponnappa and Sikki N Reddy from India in the last 16.

However, Thai compatriots Benyapa Aimsaard and Nuntakarn Aimsaard bowed, losing to Chinese Li Wenmei and Zheng Yu 9-21, 14-21.

Women’s singles hopefuls Ratchanok Intanon, Busanan Ongbamrungphan, Phittayaporn Chaiwan and men’s singles player Kantaphon Wangcharoen were due for their second round later last night.

Another mixed doubles prospect, Supak Jomkoh and Supissara Paewsampran, was also due to play later.

In other women’s singles matches, South Korea’s An Se-Young, Japan’s Sakaya Takahashi and China’s Wang Zhiyi have all qualified.
