55-year-old man drowns looking for mushrooms


PHUKET: The body of a 55-year-old man who had gone to collect mushrooms was found in Pru Jeh Son Lake at Moo 3, Mai Khao, just inland about halfway along Mai Khao beach.

Tha Chatchai Police Lt. Col. Thongchai Kreerat said officers were first informed at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday May 22 by Mai Khao Kamnan (sub-district chief) Olin Maliwan that local villager Khanong ‘Ae ‘ Thaweewong Sunthorn, 55, had gone in search of mushrooms. had not returned home.

It was feared Mr Khanong had drowned, Mr Olin said.

Police and rescue workers arrived at the lake to find Mr Khanong’s motorbike and sidecar parked at the scene. Her black flip-flops were perfectly at the water’s edge.

Mr. Kanong’s son, Mr. Jayawat, 23, said his father went to get mushrooms every morning around 6 p.m. He usually returned home around 8 a.m.

Family members went in search of Mr Khanong and raised the alarm when they found his shoes by the lake, but did not find him.

Rescue divers from the Kusoldharm Foundation have begun their search for the lake.

After about two hours of combing the lake, divers found Mr Khanong’s body submerged in water about three meters deep.

Mr. Khanong was not wearing a shirt. He was dressed in nothing but shorts, as if he intended to go swimming.

Officers found no injuries or signs of a struggle on Mr. Khanong’s body or in the area.

Regardless, Mr Khanong’s body was taken to Thalang Hospital for post-mortem examination as standard procedure while police investigate his death.
