PHUKET: Police arrested 27 players while playing baccarat during a raid on a beachfront hotel in the Muang district of the southern island resort province early on Sunday.
They were charged with illegal gambling and violating a provincial assembly ban.
Twenty-seven players – including a local politician – playing baccarat in a hotel room were arrested in the raid.
Police seized three baccarat tables, tokens, computers and many other gambling related items.
The hotel is located on a hill on a road in the Ko Sire to Tambon Ratsada area of ââMuang district.
Muang Phuket police chief Pol Col Thirawat Liamsuwan said the hotel was under surveillance after it was allegedly used as a games room at the end of June this year when it was not yet open to services.
Information provided by local informants led to the raid on Sunday morning, he said.
The raid was carried out by a combined unit of the Crime Suppression Division (CSD) and Provincial Police led by Major General Pol Pornsak Nuannoo, the Phuket Police Chief.
